"I will echo a few comments and say that it does largely depend on the dog. I got Callie at Dekalb Animal, a local high kill shelter. I live in town, in a townhouse with no yard. We exclusively leash-walk and there is a dog park in our community…"

"Hi Adrianne,  I'm sorry you got burned by Hoboken parking - it's pretty painful!  Almost cheaper to live here!  There is a lot of opportunity for physical activity here, for sure. Thanks for your response, Kate"

"Hoboken is not a big city like Manhattan or Chicago. I know Hoboken. Not everyone who adopts has a backyard, it is depends on the dog.  The most important thing is that a dog has to get out for physical exercise and in Hoboken since there is…"

"True. It's the temperament of the individual dog that matters most."

"My doodles appear to be an exception to the usual doodle need for lots of activity.  Both do fine with suburban noises - trains,  planes, traffic - we worked on exposure with the doodle we raised from a puppy.   Our rescue is from our…"

"Jack also does not play with other dogs and doesn't play by himself in the yard. But he goes nuts if he doesn't have a chance to chase a ball at least 30 minutes daily, and that means a lot of running. In bad weather, we play fetch…"

"Unfortunately, Kate, experience has shown us that most adult doodles (and many adult rescue dogs in general) do not do well in an urban environment. While there are certainly a lot of doodles living in urban environments, when placing a rescue dog…"

city doodle? opinions please!

Hi All!I have been doing a lot of research on what dog would be a great fit for my home.  Right now a Doodle is at the top because of their friendliness, intelligence and their potential to shed less.  Plus my boyfriend's sister has a Doodle, which I love.  And, s/he must be a rescue.I would like opinions from Doodle owners.  I currently live in a city.  There is a fenced-in dog park at the end of my block.  There is also a long walkway along the waterfront as well.  I grew up in the suburbs…See More

Tell us about yourself and how we might help you:
I am long-time dog owner and lover. Growing up, all of my family dogs were rescues: a shepherd mix, a schnauzer and a terrier mix. They have all been wonderful, loving members of our family. I believe in adopting rescue dogs. Now that I have a new home with my boyfriend, I'm looking to adopt a new dog for our home. This time, however, I have two considerations: (1) My boyfriend has mild allergies would prefer a poodle mix and (2) I am currently studying to be a speech language pathologist and want a smart, friendly dog that can be trained to be a visiting or therapy dog. A labradoodle seems to be the perfect answer! I want to make sure my doodle is a rescue, so that is how I found this site.
Tell us about your doodle(s) and/or other pets that you have:
I currently don't have any pets in my home. I recently moved from my mother's house where she has Benny, our schnauzer, and Lily, our Jack-mix. They are small dogs (about 20 lbs) and I would like to find a dog that can visit and play with them in the yard.
Where did you get your doodle(s) and/or why you have chosen a doodle
I have a chosen a doodle because of their loving disposition, intelligence, coat and I would like to do light hiking, etc. with my pet.
Are you now involved in Rescue? If so, how? Tell us a bit as to why you are here:
I am not directly involved in rescue but we have always had rescued pets: 3 dogs and 3 cats over 30 years.

Welcome!  I have 2 doodles and they are both great and I wanted to get at least 1 of them into therapy work, but it takes a certain type of personality that neither of my guys have (1 is very shy and the other gets too excited around new people), so while labradoodles are great dogs, not all of them are cut out for therapy work.  If you have any questions just let me know and I would be happy to help.

Be sure to fill out an application (form at the top of the page), click on the Doodles in Need section, check Petfinder (putting in all zip codes within driving distance), and google in shelters and humane societies within your driving range. Check back often. Not all doodles are allergy friendly, so you will have to make sure when you get to the home visit stage. Not all doodles can be therapy dogs either - just as not all goldens, shepherds, labs can.
