Coal comes to Connecticut!!

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 5:30pm 11 Comments

My pack has a new foster brother, Coal, and boy is he one sweetheart. He's a gentle spirited guy who LOVES walking outdoors on a leash and running with other dogs. He also loves tennis balls and we are teaching him to catch and fetch. He now can catch nicely from about 3 feet away and he seems so proud of himself!

He is timid and shy.... loud noises and sudden movements frighten him. He acts just like a dog who has been abused…

Snowed in, cold and incommunicato in New England

Posted on November 1, 2011 at 4:12pm 8 Comments

While I was flying back from Honduras from my annual volunteer humanitarian trip, the northeast was wholloped with tons of wet snow on the trees already heavy with leaves. I made it safely to DRC headquarters courtesy of Jeanine and Jacquie who were lovely hostesses, however I missed my doodles and drove on up to CT yesterday, where the local Bradley International Airport had a total of 20 1/2 inches of heavy wet snow. The land line phones and cellular phones are not working, was well as…

Starting to feed my dogs RAW

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 8:55am 9 Comments

I've been learning and reading about feeding our dogs natural foods such as meat and fish. I've been wanting to at least supplement our current grain free kibble with more protein and perhaps switch to all RAW diet. Last week I fed the boys chicken livers and poor Seamus had terrible diarrhea. Since then I've conversed with Andrea Johnson who is a wonderful resource for RAW diet and nutrition.

Last evening I started again by giving each of the 3 doodles a raw chicken thigh. At first…

IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO SAVE A HOMELESS DOG

Posted on July 21, 2011 at 1:30pm 28 Comments

Today we are priviledged to be able to help save "Harry" from euthanization in a southern VA animal shelter. Three days ago DRC was contacted by an independent rescuer in VA who regularly visits the high kill shelters and helps pull adoptable dogs for rescue groups. This shelter is at their maximum capacity and need to start euthanizing dogs for space. Harry was one of the dogs who would probably be the first to be put down. Harry is a happy 1 yr old chocolate labradoodle (Very Labby!) who…

Dear Liz:
I'm glad to hear that there is a need in the NE area.  I'll keep checking, and try to find one closer than NY or NJ if you feel that's best.  Please be assured that we have no qualms about going to bring one back with us and are willing to make the trips to do this.  Thank you for responding, I feel better just hearing from you. In the meantime, we will fill out the volunteer application and hope that we can help in this way until the day our dog, indeed, finds us.  Thank you again for your help; you've been very kind and supportive.
Regards,
Patricia

Thank you for the wonderful welcome! Ginger had a playdate with her friends from the Vegas group on DK. It was a joy to see her play with her friends as I made new friends. Thank you for all the support and well wishes. I know Ginger will be safe and happy with us.

Hi Liz,

Hope you are having a wonderful holiday.  We are celebrating Easter at my brother's house.  Maxine is visiting with her "cousin" Sierra - a yellow lab mix.  They are having a good time together.  Maxine has been with us for less than a year but we are sooo attached to her.  She has been the perfect dog for our family!  She has brought so much joy.  Everyone who meets her asks me - Where did you find such a nice dog?  I will of course refer them to website.  I am so thankful that our family was selected to adopt her.  Thank you for all your hard work in finding good homes for dogs in need.

Sincerely,

Beth

You are right!  We see that so much with people who want to rescue a German Shepherd (as well as people relinquishing them) - they don't understand how smart they are and how much they need leadership.  If you can't provide that, look out!

PS Liz,  I love your pictures.  Another reason I'm thinking of doodles is that they seem to have such wonderful temperaments and are probably a little less angst-filled than Shepherds - I've met a few in the past year that seem like great dogs.

Hi Liz,  I am interested in doodles in part because they don't shed so much (and GSDs are terrible shedders!!) and I like their size and intelligence.  I have always had GSDs but since I have children and their friends around a lot, sometimes they are difficult for kids to deal with.  At this point I am not in a position to adopt but my dogs are both very old (12 and 13) so I know that sometime this year, sadly, I probably will!
