Profile Information

Where are you located?
Nutley, NJ
Tell us about yourself and how we might help you:
I am married with a 25yr old daughter. I am a special education teacher. We are thinking of adding another doodle to our family. I would be interested in helping the Doodle Rescue.
Tell us about your doodle(s) and/or other pets that you have:
Roxie came into our family 16 months ago and she quickly became the love of all our lives. She has the best temperament and was easily trained when we attended Puppy Kindergarden. We are now looking at an agility class because she loves to run, jump, and fetch.
Where did you get your doodle(s) and/or why you have chosen a doodle
We got Roxie from Bad Company Breeders in PA. We chose a doodle because of my husband's allergies. I am happy to say I don't know why but since we have gotten Roxie, my husband has not had a reaction to any dog, we think he may have built up an immunity or something. It is fantastic because he is so enjoying taking Roxie to the beach and dog park and socializing with other dogs.
Are you now involved in Rescue? If so, how? Tell us a bit as to why you are here:
I am not involved now but did volunteer and hope that I can be of assistance.

Exactly! When my husband began the autistic class, our district sent him to a bunch of trainings and inservices. They let me go to Oregon with him where we heard Temple Grandin speak. Wow. She was both funny and brilliant. You could see her 'autism' traits and laugh with her at them and empathize too.

My husband taught the first class in our town specifically for autistic students. He taught it for several years, then went back to regular ed. Our state is coming up with a certificate to teach autistic spectrum students and all of us who teach special ed. will need to get some training. It is still being planned so I don't know what they will finally decide. Most of the Resource teachers have students somewhere on the spectrum (some not diagnosed of course) in their caseload. I am working with one student right now who does have a diagnosis and one who doesn't.
