Profile Information

Where are you located?
Chester, New York
Tell us about yourself and how we might help you:
My husband, two sons (17 & 19) and I rescued Labradoodle 13 yrs. ago - he was THE BEST DOG. He developed diabetes last July and we had to put him to sleep this past January. We are a loving, dog-experienced, reliable family in need of a dog to love. We are looking for a neutered male, non-shedding dog that has house training and wants nothing more than to be with his humans.
Tell us about your dog(s) and/or other pets that you have:
Well, our dog, Boone, whom we put down in January due to diabetes (he lasted 6 months after diagnosis of diabetes - receiving insulin every 12 hours) was rescued 13 years ago. He was 5 months when we got him. He was neglected, had mange and skin problems, but had a great personality and it shone through. My boys were in K and 1st grade when we got him. He immediately became their "brother". Boone wasn't allowed on the beds, so my boys used to camp out on the floor with him just so they all could be together. We did all we could for him as he aged and developed the diabetes, but it was cruel to keep him alive once his back leg became paralyzed.
Have you read our adoption policies?
Kolby Kennels, New Windsor, NY.
We loved Boone so much and loved who he was. We will never be able to replace Boone, but we loved his breed. His personality was the best.
Are you now involved in Rescue? If so, how? Are you interested in volunteering with our rescue?
We are hoping to foster/adopt a doodle. We think fostering will be a good way to see if the dog is happy with us and we with the dog. We knew Boone was an instant fit.

Hi Wendy,
I'm sorry your Jack has been having a problem. Unfortunately, I don't know what Claritin dosage would be appropriate for him, since my guy is 85-90 lbs and has severe allergies, so I'm not sure that another dog of even the same weight would get the same dosage he gets. I can help with other ideas to ease his discomfort, but without knowing what his porblem is, i am very hesitant to recommend medication. My Jack gets three 10 mg. tablets once a day, which is 3x the dosage for an adult human being.
You can try purchasing a bottle of 500 mg. evening primrose oil gelcaps anywhere they sell human supplements, and give him one a day, as you would a pill. Washing his face, especially the eye area, with a warm, damp cloth every time he comes in from outside will help. Did this just start? How old is Jack?

Some people say that if you put cookie sheets upside down on your counters it will deter them from countersurfing, I never saw much of a difference except the counters looked messy!!
On the day I brought Seamus home from the shelter ( I didn't tell my husband ahead of time!) I came home and Harry and his son were in the dining room eating double meat subs from Subway and the second half of their subs were on the kitchen counters, Harry went into the kitchen for the second half of his sandwich only to find the telltale butcher paper wrapper on the floor..... GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION!!!!! If the shelter hadn't have been a 3 hour drive I think he would have been sent packing!!!

Wendi,
I'm glad Jack is doing well. The countersurfing I have the same problem with my doodle and lab. We ended up just keeping all edible items off the counter after Seamus and a foster ate the entire box of Viactive Calcium replacements complete in foil wrappers!!! They pooped tinsel streaked poop for 24 hours..... Also Jack's dad told me that one of his problems was a real love for chewing ladies' panties. I used to have a chow/golden mix who chewed holes in all my (dirty) panties and pajama bottoms, she shopped right from the hamper.... my entire undergarment wardrobe looked like a catalogue for Fredericks of Hollywood!
