Help finding a Mini

We are interested in adopting a mini Golden or Labradoodle. We're up on most of the issues concerning bringing an adopted Doodle into our family. We are keeping an eye on the available DRC Doodles and would appreciate any help in finding the right animal. We have a well behaved mellow cat we adopted and are in love with who makes regular visits to a hospice as part of the SPCA Animal Assisted Therapy program and hope to do the same with our future Doodle.

That's it. That's what it is.
Purchasing a puppy is a shopping expedition; you know what you want and all you have to do is locate someone who sells it and place an order.
Adopting a rescue dog is a treasure hunt; you want a companion, you have some vague ideas about who but no specifics. You keep your mind and you eyes open and allow the dog who needs you to find you.

My fosters have all been so big that Yankee seems small in comparison (he's currently 32lbs, and should fill out to weigh 40ish when he's grown). I can't comment on if he would be a good therapy dog, but I'd challenge ANYONE to not smile when Yankee's around. He's hilarious! And snuggly too! It's a good combination.

Andrew - I do hope you find what you're looking for! Sometimes the dog just picks you, in spite of whatever you "think" you want!!

Comment by Lucy and Sophies Mom on April 20, 2011 at 10:40am: Lots of good input provided here, but I just wanted to add a couple things about your search for a Mini Golden Doodle that you would like to get registered to be a therapy dog. The first thing is I was curious on your desire for a Mini vs. a Medium or standard. I know when we were looking to add a dog to our home I wanted a little fluffy dog and my DH wanted a large dog. When I discovered the adorable shaggy Golden Doodle I agreed to go larger ....... and I would never want to go back. I bring this up for you to consider because of a conversation that I have on Therapy visits almost every time we go out. There is a size of dog that in my opinion it would be very difficult to do therapy work with .... The dog either has to be small enough that you can carry it around and pick it up and place it on the bed, or it has to be large enough that it can sit beside the bed to be petted. I went through Hospice training with a lady that had a basset hound that weighed 60 lbs. I asked her how she intended to get the dog to where the patients could pet him ..... she certainly wasn't going to be able to pick him up! She had not even really thought about it .... not sure how that worked out for her. My opinion for therapy work is bigger is better. Sophie usually sits at the side of the bed. Occasionally if someone can't reach her I'll put my arm out for her front paws and then cautiously put them up on the bed so she doesn't get tangled in IV cords or something. Occasionally someone will insist that she jump up in the bed with them but that is very rare (and honestly makes me a little nervous). Just a little something to think about.

Comment by Deborah & Emmett on April 20, 2011 at 8:18am: I know Georgia is a bit far for you in CA, but my friend Frannie is fostering a wonderful!! labradoodle named Yankee. He's about 10 months old and is on the small/medium size and black. Yankee just loves his people and is pretty calm (subjective) for a pup. I see him at the dog park everyday and he is just a wonderful smaller dog. I highly urge you to take a look at his information. Yankee doesn't look like he's going to be a very tall or heavy dog either. All the dogs DRC have are wonderful - I'm just a little more partial to all of Frannie's fosters. I fall in love with all of them - some just a little more than others. Yankee minds very well and seems very eager to please.

When we got Clancy though he seemed 'afraid' to ask for much attention, like he couldn't trust that he was here to stay. He got over it in a big way! Now we have 65 pounds of lap doodle when I think I would prefer the 27 pounder to be the lap dood.

Comment by Karen & Jack on April 20, 2011 at 12:13am: It's funny...you see big doodles who want to smother you with kisses and be lap dogs, when most people don't want 70 lb dogs on the furniture. Then you have little Teddy, the exact kind of dog most people want for a lap dog, who really doesn't like to cuddle or even sit on the furniture, and won't get on the bed even when invited to do so. He is not real affectionate, and prefers lying on the floor with other dogs to sitting on the sofa with people. They are all such individuals, and their size or appearance doesn't have much to do with their personalities. It's one of the things I find most fascinating about mixed breeds.

Even though I know I'm too far away to be considered, I still find myself clicking on his picture & smiling. We would love & cherish that little guy every day of his life, just for being Teddy.
