A few weeks ago a new doodle joined our family! We rescued Oliver the Labradoodle from the shelter in Conroe, Tx almost 3 weeks ago. Our family could not be more thrilled. He gets along great with Brady our goldendoodle and he is such a joy. We do not know much about his past but it is clear that he did not have the best first 2 years of his life. Every day he blossoms a little bit more and manages to capture even more of our hearts. Oliver was actually listed on the doodles in need section on this site. We feel so blessed that he came into our lives. He is our first rescue and we are delighted to have him.

The transition is going great. The only struggle we have is with the cats. He has made great progress but we still catch him getting “fixated” on them and wanting to chase them. Any suggestions on helping Oliver understand that the cats are not play things would be greatly appreciated. We don’t expect them to be best friends just want everyone to coexists happily.

To anyone currently on the journey to rescue a doodle hang in there. It was an exhausting and emotional process. There were a few times when we got our hopes up but someone beat us to the dog we thought was “the one”. When it is right it will happen!

Congratulations!  I am so thrilled you got your second dood.  Oliver is gorgeous!  I do believe that the 'right time' happens - sometimes when you don't know that time is now.  Good luck with the cat part.

Kate, congratulations to you and your family! Oliver is beautiful and I can't wait to hear more about him as he settles in.

Thanks also for this blog! "When it's right, it will happen!" Truer words were never spoken.

It is great to read another happy doodle story!  :)

Kate, those are great pictures.  I am jealous...my picture taking skills are a bit lacking.

Sara we went through the same thing! We applied for a doodle we thought was perfect but our timing was off and we were too late getting our application in. The waiting, anticipation, and let down was really hard. We continued the search with DRC and local shelters and stumbled upon Oliver on Petfinder.com. We contacted the shelter and they said there was a lot of interest in him but they do not hold dogs it was first come first serve. Within 12 hours we made the few hundred mile drive to Conroe to find out he had been adopted hours before (to an 80 year old woman)! We were crushed and actually got to meet him that day because the woman had plans that night and did not want to leave him alone at her house. While we were at the shelter another family came in all the way from Louisiana wanting to adopt him. They said they did not feel the elderly woman was a great match but there was noting that made her ineligible for the dog so they let her take him but they had a feeling he would be back. Sure enough a few days later we got a call that she brought him back because he was too much dog for her and he was ours! We feel like the odd chain of events that lead us to Oliver was truly fate! I hope you find your next doodle soon :)

Thanks for sharing your story, Kate.

We applied right before Christmas to DRC for a dog that (in my opinion) would be perfect for our family, and our family would be perfect for her. Waiting to hear any news, not knowing whether it will come or not, is so hard. In the meantime, I did what Jane suggested and looked for listings at my local shelter. Believe it or not, I saw a doodle online the very first time I looked! It felt crazy, but I drove over to see her. By the time I got there (which was only later that same day), she was already adopted. It just made me realize that I really do want to add a second doodle to our family. Now, it's just a matter of waiting on the right timing.

Your story is an encouragement! Lucky Oliver to have your family and a doodle "brother" in Brady. Lucky you to get to have him in your family. Neat photos, too. :)
