Labradoodle Rescue & Goldendoodle Rescue
This was Lacey's first 4th of July with us and I was not sure how she would react. She is so scared of everything that I feared the worst. I didn't know if she would panic in the house or not (I definitely knew I was not going to let her outside during the "action"). We did not attended either of the fireworks shows that take place near us this year because I was too tired from a 10k race in the morning. It was an early bedtime for me so I was laying in bed when the first boom sounded outside. To my surprise Lacey quietly crawled up in bed between DH and I; something she never does. She creeped to the top of the bed and laid her head on my pillow. She wasn't panting heavy or shaking but she did keep pushing her head under my hand so that my hand was resting on her shoulder. I just scratched her shoulder and kept saying "Its OK Lacey" or "what a brave girl you are". Shortly after the fireworks were over Lacey gave my hand a couple of kisses and she hopped off our bed to return to her own. If DH hadn't been there to confirm I would have sworn that I dreamed it all.

Comment by Deborah & Emmett on July 8, 2012 at 11:43am Nina: I just can't believe how far Lacey (Lucy) has come from that poor frightened runaway doodle that I had to feed in the living and then leave so she would feel secure enough to eat. I am soooo happy that she's found such a wonderful home with you. Give her a big hug from me and from the "boys." Hope to actually meet her again some day.
Comment by Nina W, Georgia Director on July 7, 2012 at 12:47pm Colleen, sounds like you swaddled Jake. I have done the same with my sister's Westie during thunderstorms and fireworks. It does seem to help.
Comment by Colleen, Jake & Baxter on July 7, 2012 at 11:06am That is so good to hear about Lacey! I had a rescue dog that was such a scardey cat myself and I know how challenging it can be. He was not allowed on the bed but one of his biggest fears was hearing the rumble of the garbage trucks on garbage day and he would jump up next to me trembling like crazy.
Jake used to be fine with fireworks until the new years eve we were out walking way before midnight in our neighborhood. All was quiet until suddenly this big boom sounded right behind us and scared the crap out of us. It was an illegal firework that had misfired and Jake was in a panicked state the whole rest of the evening:(
This year I wrapped him up like a burrito and he cuddled next to me. We were both HOT but it seemed to keep him calm.
Comment by Joe Santone on July 6, 2012 at 8:13pm My Gordy does pretty much the same thing. In his early years he would stand up with his paws on a window sill and watch the fireworks. Now he seems to be frightened by them. I don't understand the change in behavior, but it isn't a major problem. Now when he hears the first boom he casually takes himself up to the second floor and lays on my bed. The bed seems to have become a safe place for him lately. I'll go up and coax him back down and he and my wife will sit on either side of him with hands on. He never whines or barks, but you can tell he's frightened. He reacts the same way with thunder.
